East Carolina Mortuary Services was originally established under the name of TLC Transport under the ownership of John "Butch" Powers in 1994. TLC operated for a number of years solely as a transportation company, predominantly serving the Eastern Region Medical Examiner's Office. TLC grew rapidly, assisting with greater than 200 travel needs per year. The company was then sold to Thurman Ramsey, an employee with TLC, in 2003 and he continued to operate the company until his retirement. In 2012, the Wilkerson Family of Companies purchased the company and changed the name to East Carolina Mortuary Services (ECMS), to better reflect its new service offerings.
Today, ECMS continues to serve the Eastern Regional Medical Examiner's Office as well as Honor Bridge (formerly Carolina Donor Services) and a number of funeral homes in and beyond North Carolina.
